1. Topic:European Union: FAIRS Country Report Annual
Time: 1 Nov 2024
Content:This report provides an overview of EU food and feed legislation currently in force for the EU. USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) staff reviewed and updated all sections of this annual report. For ongoing updates on developments in EU food and feed legislation, check the USEU FAS website at www.usda-eu.org
2. Topic:Fresh Deciduous Fruit Annual
Time: 1 Nov 2024
Content:New Zealand’s apple-planted area in the 2024/2025 market year (MY) is forecast to increase substantially to 11,100 hectares (ha) from the significant damage to farms due to Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023. The cyclone caused considerable damage due to large-scale floodwaters, silt, debris, wind, and surface flooding in the primary apple-growing regions of Hawkes Bay and Gisborne. FAS/Wellington forecasts apple production in the 2024/2025 MY to be 560,000 metric tons (MT). This is representative of an optimistic weather outlook, implementation of farm system innovations, and a growing availability of seasonal labor. In addition, hectares planted in recent years are reaching maturity and achieving higher yields. January to September in 2023/2024 MY, exports are tracking over 10 percent higher than the previous year. Recent media has reported the potential prospects of the total annual revenue in the current market year exceeding NZ$1 billion (US$ 600 million), the highest ever annually.
3. Topic:Thailand: Rice Price - Weekly
Time: 1 Nov 2024
Content:Rice export prices dropped 1-5 percent from the previous week due to the weakening of the Thai baht and India’s removal of all export restrictions on non-Basmati white rice and on parboiled rice
4、Topic:Bangladesh: Cotton and Products Update
Time: 1 Nov 2024
Content:In marketing year (MY) 2024/25, Post forecasts cotton acreage and production slightly lower at 45,000 hectares and 153,000 bales, due to heavy rain in some cotton growing districts during the seed sowing period. For MY 2024/25, Post also forecasts higher imports of raw cotton at 8 million bales, driven by higher demand in the RMG sector and a lower projection of fabric imports. India, Brazil, Benin, and the United States remain the largest suppliers of cotton to Bangladesh.
5. Topic:Argentina: Dairy and Products Annual
Time: 1 Nov 2024
Content:In 2024, Argentina's dairy production faced significant challenges, primarily due to severe weather and economic issues which led to a projected 7 percent decline in milk output, estimated at 10,708 metric tons (MT). Despite this, exports of whole milk powder (WMP) rose by 23 percent in the first seven months compared to 2023, with total WMP exports expected to increase by 15 percent by year-end, reaching 128,000 MT. Cheese exports also saw an 8 percent boost, projected to close at 108,000 MT. For 2025, a 6 percent recovery in milk production is anticipated, as well as increases in exports across major dairy products, including growth forecasted in WMP exports
6. Topic:Caribbean Basin: Agricultural Biotechnology Annual
Time: 4 Nov 2024
Content:Access to the benefits of modern agricultural biotechnology in the Caribbean Basin remains stifled by the unfinished work of implementing a science-based, risk-management approach to regulate its use. A handful of Caribbean countries are now planning to seek funding to complete this work, which could possibly open the door to future research, field trials and eventually commercial production of GE crops in the region.
7.Topic:Australia: Agricultural Biotechnology Annual
Time: 4 Nov 2024
Content:The Australian federal government’s strong support for biotechnology is evident in its considerable long-term funding commitment to research and development. Despite the contentious nature of biotech in Australia, the federal government remains a strong proponent, investing heavily in research and development and approving various genetically engineered crops for commercial use. Although many states initially imposed restrictions on biotech, most have since lifted their moratoria, allowing the cultivation of genetically engineered crops like canola, cotton, etc. While Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory maintain bans, the rest of the mainland states now permit farmers to grow federally approved genetically engineered crops
8.Topic: Brazil: Agricultural Biotechnology Annual
Time: 4 Nov 2024
Content:Brazil is the second-largest producer of biotech crops in the world, with 131 events approved for plants. For the 2024/2025 crop season, FAS Brasilia forecasts 68.5 million hectares planted with GE traits. Adoption rates for soybeans and cotton reached 99 percent and for corn, 95 percent. The biotechnology sector has experienced no significant change to date. Continued use of biotechnology seeds has been a major contributor to yield growth in Brazil since its adoption. In addition to GE plants, this report provides updates on several aspects of these new technologies.
9.Topic:Jordan: Grain and Feed Update
Time: 4 Nov 2024
Content:Jordan continues to rely heavily on imports for essential staples such as wheat, barley, corn, and rice due to limited domestic production and scarce water resources. In marketing year (MY) 2024/25, domestic wheat production remains low, at 30,000 metric tons (MT), relative to Jordan's domestic consumption. Imports are forecast to rise to 1.2 million metric tons (MMT) to meet growing consumption needs, primarily sourced from Black Sea countries. Barley production is stable at 25,000 MT, with imports forecast to reach 1.2 MMT in MY 2024/25. Corn imports are forecast at 730,000 MT, and rice imports are projected at 225,000 MT. Jordan's food security strategy focuses on building strategic reserves, with government policies ensuring stable supplies and maintaining the bread subsidy program to stabilize prices amid regional challenges.
10.Topic:Egypt: Fresh Deciduous Fruit Annual
Time: 5 Nov 2024
Content:Egyptian table grape production is forecast to increase to 1.59 million metric tons (MMT) in marketing year (MY) 2024/25 (October 2024 through September 2025). Egyptian exports of table grapes are forecast up by 5.7 percent (185,000 MT) due to new varieties which have improved production and quality. Furthermore, as a result of the August 12, 2024 Official Statement from Egypt’s Central Administration for Plant Quarantine (CAPQ), it has made considerable contribution to both production and trade.
11.Topic:Nigeria: Biotechnology and Other New Production Technologies Annual
Time: 12 Nov 2024
Content:In January 2024, Nigeria became the second country in Africa to approve the commercial release of four biotech (TELA) maize varieties. On March 6, 2024, the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA) changed its name to the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) in recognition of its research mission. At least five biotech crops are in different developmental stages, including rice, cassava, sorghum, and potato.
